The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Charles B. Wild, Jr. (ASN: 0-63065), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 13 February 1951, a reinforced platoon, under Captain Wild’s command, from Company B was moving forward to secure a series of hills near Suso-ri, Korea, when it suddenly encountered strong enemy machine gun fire. Captain Wild immediately deployed his men to the best possible advantage and attempted to make radio contact with the battalion command post to inform them as to what had happened, only to find the radio inoperative. Realizing the imperative need to contact the headquarters unit, he ran across approximately 150 yards of bullet-splattered terrain to a nearby village where a land line was located. When he had contacted the battalion, he was informed that it had been attacked, but that the patrol’s position was a definite hindrance to the enemy’s advance and must be maintained. Returning to the patrol, Captain Wild swiftly organized a perimeter and placed his machine guns into advantageous positions. The numerically superior enemy, shortly thereafter, surrounded the unit and subjected it to several bitter assaults. Each attack was beaten back with staggering enemy losses and Captain Wild moved constantly among his troops directing their fire, encouraging them, and distributing ammunition. By his able employment of his smaller force and firm leadership, the patrol held off the enemy for eight hours until a tank force arrived to relieve its besieged position. Captain Wild’s superb tactical skill and gallant determination reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
