The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Carl W. Wiggins (ASN: RA-14276015), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 28 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kujang-dong, Korea. The defensive position of Company C was attacked by overwhelming enemy forces and after a bitter three hour battle the unit was forced to withdraw under heavy enemy pressure. The vicious enemy onslaught overran the company’s weapons platoon and the mortar squad of which Corporal Wiggins was a member was surrounded by the enemy. Refusing to abandon his position, he continued to lay accurate mortar fire on the rapidly advancing enemy, inflicting great casualties upon them. With his accurate and steady fire he also destroyed a hostile machine gun position and throughout the engagement was greatly instrumental to the success of his company in accomplishing its mission. The gallantry displayed by Corporal Wiggins reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
