Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 941 (June 11, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Julius C. Wieczorek (ASN: 20601461), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Department, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 24 March 1944. Though his duties were normally of an administrative nature, Sergeant Wieczorek repeatedly led litter squads in treating and evacuating the wounded while under fire. In one instance he ran through enemy fire to aid a seriously-wounded comrade who had fallen in an exposed spot. Instructing his squad to remain covered, Sergeant Wieczorek immediately applied a tourniquet and carried him to safety. Sergeant Wieczorek was fatally wounded later by a Japanese sniper after he courageously ran thirty yards in the face of intense hostile fire to treat a wounded man. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
