The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private William O. Wiebenga (ASN: RA-16330786), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 October 1951 in the vicinity of Tondul, Korea. On this date Company C was attacking vital enemy positions. Due to the prolonged encounter, the unit’s supply of ammunition ran critically low. Private Wiebenga, a carrying party guide, realizing the seriousness of the situation, volunteered to replenish the supply. Disregarding the intense hostile fire, he made repeated trips over the hazardous terrain with the vital ammunition. Later, when his unit withdrew to more tenable positions, Private Wiebenga remained behind to cover the withdrawal of his wounded comrades. In the course of this action, he observed a helpless comrade lying in an exposed area which was under enemy observation and fire. He immediately crawled to the side of the wounded man and carried him to safety. His selfless devotion to duty and comrades was an inspiration to the men of his unit. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Wiebenga on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
