The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Linus Whittington, United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea, on 24 June 1953. During the early morning hours of June 24, 1953, part of Corporal Whittington’s platoon was pinned down by the heavy fire from a numerically superior attacking enemy force. Corporal Whittington, without regard for his personal safety, left his bunker and set up his machine gun in an exposed area to gain a better position from which he directed accurate fire against the enemy. After effectively neutralizing hostile fire and enabling friendly units to gain fire superiority, he remained in the area until the enemy had been repulsed. As a result of his courageous actions, the enemy suffered numerous casualties. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Whittington, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
