The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal John E. Whitley (ASN: RA-18268026), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the morning of 21 November 1952, a platoon of Company I, 3d Battalion, of which Corporal Whitley was automatic rifleman, was assigned the mission of assaulting hostile positions on “Jackson Heights”, in the vicinity of Hak Tong-Ni, Korea. Upon reaching their objective, the platoon was subjected to a barrage of mortar fire, during which Corporal Whitley observed enemy forces moving down the hill. While crossing the open terrain to a position from where he could place effective fire against these forces, he was wounded. Although unable to walk, he dragged himself to an advantageous position where he delivered intense automatic rifle fire, causing the enemy forces to withdraw. When his platoon advanced, Corporal Whitley refused to be evacuated and remained to cover the assault. As a result of his action, his platoon was provided with the covering fire needed to successfully complete the mission. Corporal Whitley’s outstanding gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
