The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Keith W. Whitham (ASN: 0-1342223), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Tank Company, 5th Regimental Combat Team, 24th Infantry Division, in action near Kumchon, Korea, on 22 September 1950. He was in command of the leading element during his battalion’s advance. Completely disregarding his own safety he led his men again and again in their successful assaults against strong enemy defenses. Constantly exposed to heavy enemy fire he continued to press the attack. So swift was his advance that his small force liberated 45 allied prisoners of war whose captors were routed before the onslaught of his attack. In the course of this gallant actions many casualties were inflicted among the enemy and over 100 of his troops captured. Lieutenant Whitham’s courageous actions, fearless example and outstanding leadership reflect the greatest credit on himself and the United States Armor.
