The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) to Corporal Hurley M. Whitehead, United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, at Casablanca, on 11 July 1943. Corporal Whitehead, without thought of danger to his own life, entered the turbulent and dangerous waters to attempt to rescue from drowning, Frenchmen from the Atlantic Ocean. He gave his life in the effort. The heroism displayed by Corporal Whitehead on this occasion, at the cost of his life, reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
