Kidwell (ASN: 0-82717), United States Army, for heroism in aerial flight as evidenced by actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Kidwell distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 19 June 1967 while serving as platoon leader of a gunship platoon, Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. On this date Major Kidwell was alerted to provide aerial support for the 3d Squadron Command Post which had been assaulted by an estimated battalion of well-armed Viet Cong. In the space of a few minutes Major Kidwell was flying at maximum air speed toward the scene of the fierce fire fight. Monitoring information while en route Major Kidwell was able to analyze the situation upon arrival over the battlefield. Noticing an unknown type of rocket streaking toward the beleaguered command post Major Kidwell engaged the hostile position and bravely flew through withering fire to silence the rocket emplacement. Flying beneath friendly mortar rounds Major Kidwell initiated several low level passes upon the Viet Cong evading their fire with his expert maneuvering. Attacking swiftly and with devastating accuracy Major Kidwell routed the enemy. Then monitoring an urgent call for a medical evacuation aircraft and aware that none was in the area he gallantly volunteered to extract the injured man from the command post. Amidst sporadic sniper fire and poor visibility he skillfully eased his aircraft into a small clearing. Two casualties were placed aboard and Major Kidwell sped them to the nearest medical facility. Major Kidwell’s spirited aggressiveness, courage and outstanding flying ability are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Armor) Walter E. Kidwell (ASN: 0-82717), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Kidwell distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 10 November 1966 as a helicopter pilot during an emergency at the Xuan Loc Airport. He had completed refueling his helicopter and was leaving the area when a large rubber container of highly flammable fuel began burning. Ignoring the heat and shrapnel from exploding shells, Captain Kidwell ran to his helicopter and flew it out of the danger area.
