The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Plummer E. White (ASN: RA-43011415), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 October 1951, Company F had been given the mission of capturing Hill 400, near Chorwon, Korea. During the initial stages of the assault, the unit encountered a heavy barrage of enemy mortar, small arms, and automatic weapons fire and was pinned down. Sergeant White, Platoon Guide of the First Platoon, observing that most of the fire emanated from a bunker further up on the slope of the hill and realizing the drastic need to keep the company moving to prevent enemy artillery from being zeroed in on their position, unhesitatingly rushed forward, hurling grenades into the enemy bunker, blasting it apart and completely destroying it. This fearless and voluntary action removed a hazardous obstacle in the path of the company advance and enabled it to secure the objective. Sergeant White’s selfless gallantry reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
