The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Laurens White (ASN: RA-16510551), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 29th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, near the Imjin River, Korea, Private White was a member of the artillery forward observer team attached to an infantry company, which was attacked by a large force of enemy soldiers. When the forward observer of the team was wounded and evacuated, Private White, the radio operator, volunteered to remain in the exposed forward position and continue to adjust the artillery fire. Although his position was the target for enemy automatic fire, Private White continued to guide the effective artillery support until his radio, which he carried on his back was put out of commission by the enemy fire. Even then he did not abandon his hazardous position until the infantry had completed its withdrawal. Private White’s gallantry and courageous disregard for his personal safety reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
