The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Captain (Infantry) Kent B. White (ASN: 0-404333), United States Army, for heroic achievement as Commanding Officer of Company G, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action on 1 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. On the morning of that date his company was attached to the 1st Battalion in an attempt to block the breakthrough of large enemy forces toward Changnyong. He placed his company in the best possible position to delay the advance of the enemy, but was attacked from both the front and rear by a numerically superior enemy force. He repeatedly visited positions about to be overrun by fanatical attacks, rallying his men to the extent that they fought off the enemy, inflicting heavy casualties upon the hostile force. At about 1000 hours, he received orders to cover the withdrawal of the battalion. By placing automatic weapons in strong points and leapfrogging his platoons, he was able to bring his entire company safely into the new defensive perimeter of the battalion. The heroism displayed by Captain White reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.

Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 369 (October 9, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry), [then Captain] Kent B. White (ASN: 0-404333), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, SIXTH Army (then Commanding Officer, Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division), in action against an armed enemy on 8 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changyong, Korea. On that date the friendly elements were attacked by a determined numerically superior enemy force which had penetrated their lines at several points and cut off one platoon. After repelling wave after wave of the onrushing enemy hordes until their ammunition was nearly expended, the friendly unit was forced to withdraw to a secondary position. Lacking platoon leaders and experienced non-commissioned officers and handicapped with thirty-five men who were encountering the enemy for the first time, Major White personally directed and coordinated the withdrawal of the isolated platoon. With complete disregard for personal safety and while under heavy enemy fire, Major White displayed outstanding leadership and abilities by reorganizing and rallying the disrupted troops. Although seriously wounded in both legs during this action, he continued his brilliant leadership, dispatching orders to his unit by runner and fighting off the enemy around him as he remained in his exposed position, bleeding and unable to walk or crawl. Major White’s sincere devotion to duty and courageous conduct so inspired his men that they, against great odds, rallied and retook the vital position. Major White’s unflinching courage and consummate devotion to duty reflect untold glory upon himself and uphold the most esteemed traditions of the military service.
