The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Donald E. White (ASN: ER-45047676), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 25 May 1951, in the vicinity of Waya-ri, Korea. Sergeant White’s platoon had the mission of seizing and securing well-entrenched enemy positions located on a high hill. As the platoon advanced upon the objective, it suddenly came under intense enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire and was forced to take coverer. With utter disregard for his own safety, Sergeant White exposed himself to the intense enemy fire and crossed an open field to an advantageous firing position. From that close range, he succeeded in destroying a hostile machine gun by rifle and grenade fire, killing all five of its crew and forcing other enemy in the vicinity to retreat. His courageous act enabled his platoon to seize the objective. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant White reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
