The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private David R. White (ASN: RA-14209900), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 5 March 1951, near Kyechon-hi, Korea. On the morning of that date he was an automatic rifleman in an infantry company which had the mission of attacking enemy-held positions on top of a ridge near Kyechon-ni. During the advance, the unit encountered an enemy force estimated to be a company, but was able to drive the enemy off the ridge and secure the hill. During the reorganization, Private White was sent to protect the right flank with his rifle. Upon reaching his position on the flank, he observed an enemy group reorganizing for a counterattack. Under heavy grenade and small arms fire, he delivered such effective fire from his rifle that he broke up the attack and inflicted many casualties. When reinforcements arrived at his position they found that Private White had been mortally wounded by sniper fire. His courageous action prevented the enemy from penetrating the unit’s position and inflicting heavy casualties upon it. The gallant conduct of Private White reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
