The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Field Artillery) Cecil B. White (ASN: 0-450127), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Executive Officer, 15th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 3 March 1951 in the vicinity of Hoengsong, Korea. Major White was accompanying a platoon of the First Marine Division out of Hoengsong with the hopes of recovering some of the equipment which the 15th Field Artillery Battalion had lost when its positions were overrun. Although heavy artillery, mortar and small arms fire poured in around him, Major While was not deterred in his mission. Reaching the area where his battalion had been overrun, he detached himself from the Marine force and proceeded to inspect a large amount of equipment that was intact and undamaged. During a small arms fight with the enemy, Major White killed one enemy and captured an enemy officer. Returning to the battalion command post, he directed a recovery team to the equipment and back to safety. The gallant conduct and devotion to duty displayed by Major White reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
