Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 279 (July 13, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Byron J. White (ASN: RA-16229383), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 31 January 1951, near Yongin, Korea, Sergeant White was in command of a recoilless rifle section supporting rifle elements in an assault on Hill 425. In the ensuing action, the leader of a rifle squad fell wounded and temporarily deprived of leadership, the squad began to disperse. Sergeant White, appraising the situation, quickly assumed control of the rifle unit in addition to his own section. Soon after this, he also was wounded but with determination maintained command of the two units, directing their attack and encouraging them to continue their aggressive action. Not until he was wounded a second time did Sergeant White reluctantly relinquish command and after treating his own wounds, crawled from the scene of battle to a safer position. Sergeant White’s extreme gallantry and tenacious devotion to duty reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
