The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Francis Edward Whelan (ASN: RA-19106069), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. On that date his company was assaulting enemy-held high ground. During the advance, Private Whelan’s squad was subjected to intense hostile small arms fire and was pinned down. Private Whelan, with a magnificent display of courage, voluntarily pushed forward alone into the withering enemy fire. His undaunted charge diverted the enemy’s fire from his hard-pressed squad, who relieved of the enemy pressure, were able to resume the assault. While thus engaged, Private Whelan was struck down by enemy fire and fell mortally wounded. His gallantry and selfless devotion to duty and to his comrades reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
