Headquarters, 7th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 594 (September 8, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Samuel S. Wheeler (ASN: RA-14414967), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Sokkogae, Korea. On 9 July 1953, Private Wheeler volunteered to take much needed supplies to a strategic friendly-held outpost. After delivering the supplies, Private Wheeler was moving through an intense enemy artillery and mortar barrage when he heard a call for help. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Wheeler moved into the impact area and found a friendly wounded man. Applying effective first aid to the wounded soldier, Private Wheeler evacuated the casualty to an aid station and was personally responsible for saving the man’s life. The gallantry displayed by Private Wheeler reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
