The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Robert J. Weyandt, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 12 March 1944. During the fierce American counterattack on Japanese positions on Hill 700, Corporal Weyandt distinguished himself by giving first aid to the wounded and assisting in their evacuation. With disregard for his own safety, he repeatedly exposed himself to intense hostile fire to reach fallen comrades. Even after being severely wounded, he continued his efforts until the entire position had been recaptured. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
