Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 270 (July 11, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Frank S. Westling (ASN: 0-1685600), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 April 1951, near the Imjin River, Korea, Lieutenant Westling’s platoon was occupying defensive positions on the Kansas Line when it was assaulted by a strong enemy force. Enemy sniper fire on the assaulting hostile elements. Realizing that this obstacle would have to be eliminated immediately, he first threw grenades and then directed machine gun fire at the snipers’ position but failed to neutralize the hostile fire. Arming himself with a carbine, he charged across 30 yards of open terrain and single-handedly assaulted the enemy entrenchments. Closing with the enemy, Lieutenant Westling succeeded in killing three snipers who occupied the position. Although painfully wounded in the arm during the encounter, he continued to fire on the enemy as he withdrew to his own lines. Lieutenant Westling’s gallantry, courage, and selfless devotion to duty reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
