The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) William M. Westfall (ASN: 0-205588), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Tank Company, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 25 November 1950 and 26 November 1950, near Kwang-dong, Korea. On the night of 25 November 1950 his company was in a forward assembly area with a rifle battalion, in order to support an attack by that unit on the following morning. At approximately 2300 hours, a strong enemy force attacked the battalion’s perimeter, causing elements of the battalion to withdraw. Captain Westfall moved his tanks to the best defensive positions, and assumed command of the infantry troops as they drew back to his positions. He constantly exposed himself to the heavy enemy fire, with complete disregard for his personal safety, as he coordinated the fire of his tanks and located target areas. So inspiring and efficient was his leadership throughout the night, that by 0700 hours on 26 November 1950, the enemy attack was completely repulsed. The gallant performance of Captain Westfall on this occasion was a source of great inspiration to all members of his unit and fully upheld the high traditions of the military service.
