Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 260 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Ernest W. Werner (ASN: ER-57125132), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 3d Reconnaissance Company, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 26 May 1951, near Sawolpyong, Korea, the 3d Platoon of the company was ambushed by the enemy with small arms and automatic weapons fire. In the action, a personnel carrier ran over an enemy mine and overturned, throwing off all of the passengers and pinning some of its crewmen beneath it. During the excitement and confusion, Private Werner, who could have remained in a relatively safe position, drove his ambulance jeep over the mine infested, rugged mountain road to the disabled carrier. He immediately began evacuating the wounded, making repeated trips through the heavy enemy fire between the aid station and the beleaguered platoon, not seeking cover until all the wounded had been taken to a place of safety. Private Werner’s gallant devotion to duty under the most perilous conditions reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
