Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 121 (May 27, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Master Sergeant] Thomas E. Weikel (ASN: 0-2262411), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 25 November 1950 in the vicinity of Unbong-dong, Korea. On the night of that date Lieutenant Weikel’s company was in defensive positions after being overtaken by darkness while en route to attack an enemy-held hill. About 2300 hours, the two squads composing the point were attacked by the enemy and threatened with encirclement. Lieutenant Weikel immediately obtained a supply of ammunition and fearlessly advanced across an open area swept by intense fire from both sides, until he reached the positions occupied by the two squads. His complete disregard for personal safety gave his men an example of courage that enabled them to resist the attack of a numerically superior enemy force and reach the safety of the platoon area. The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Weikel reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
