Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 1 (January 1, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class John J. Wehinger (ASN: RA-12340719), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 25 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. On that date Private Wehinger’s company was surrounded and cut off by enemy forces which had infiltrated to the company’s rear. The enemy roadblock prevented the company from evacuating its wounded and from effecting a withdrawal. Because of a shortage of medical personnel several of the wounded were not being treated and were in danger of being captured by the enemy. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Wehinger voluntarily left his covered position and began to evacuate wounded soldiers to a safer area, giving treatment to as many as possible. While engaged in this mission an enemy group discovered his position and launched an attack, wounding him. Fearlessly Private Wehinger stood upright in an exposed position and disregarding the overwhelming odds, placed automatic rifle fire upon the advancing enemy, forcing them to withdraw. While engaged in this fire fight Private Wehinger was mortally wounded. His courageous sacrifice was responsible for saving the lives of several of his comrades. The gallantry and high devotion to duty displayed by Private Wehinger reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
