The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Colonel (Infantry) Maynard B. Weaver, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as an Advisor to the Turkish United Nations Brigade Advisory Group, EIGHTH U.S. Army, in action against the enemy at Keachon, Korea, on 29 and 30 November 1950. Colonel Weaver was accompanying a column of mixed United States and Turkish troops withdrawing from Keachon to Kunu-ri when, on a narrow mountain-pass road, the column was blocked by enemy fire. Advancing down the road toward the head of the column, he organized troops into a firing line to prevent infiltration into the column during the oncoming darkness, despite the heavy enemy fire. Later, when orders from the division commander were received to establish blocking positions where the column had been stopped, Colonel Weaver organized a hillside position to block the enemy’s advance from the northeast and held this position until the early morning hours. Although Colonel Weaver was without command assignment, he displayed outstanding courage and leadership under fire in organizing disorganized troops into an effective force and, by his action, delayed the advance of the enemy upon units which were withdrawing farther to the west. The gallant leadership of Colonel Weaver reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
