The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Richard M. Gibson (ASN: 0-378585), United States Army, for gallantry in action on **** 1943, about five miles from ****, Italy. First Lieutenant Gibson, Commanding Company B, 1st Battalion, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, observed one of the platoons of his Company falling back in the face of heavy mortar and automatic weapons fire. Having given no orders for withdrawal, he crawled forward through the zone of hostile fire, rallied the platoon, and by his own inspiring behavior, encouraged the men to hold fast and enable the company to accomplish its mission. During this action First Lieutenant Gibson was seriously wounded. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
