Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 495 (November 21, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John B. Wasson (ASN: RA-19378475), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the night of 10 July 1953, in the vicinity of Sangmok-sil, Korea, an ambush patrol led by Sergeant Wasson was in position forward of the main line of resistance when it was attacked by an enemy force which inflicted several casualties. Sergeant Wasson immediately administered first aid to the wounded and removed them to sheltered positions. Courageously disregarding the intense enemy automatic weapons fire, he then moved around the perimeter, redistributing ammunition and encouraging his men. Although wounded by enemy grenade fragments, he bravely continued to direct the patrol members until the foe had been successfully repelled. Refusing medical aid, he valiantly guided his men back to friendly positions. Sergeant Wasson’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
