Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 98 (May 6, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Oleg V. Warnek (ASN: 0-2210266), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Battery [then Battery A], 503d Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. Lieutenant Warnek’s battalion, while displacing rearward, was ambushed and subjected to intense enemy mortar, automatic weapons and small arms fire delivered from commanding ground overlooking the escape route. In spite of the heavy enemy fire falling in his proximity, Lieutenant Warnek repeatedly exposed himself to remove wounded soldiers out of the line of fire and to place them on undamaged vehicles. When his battery was forced to move across country in order to escape the enemy ambush, he organized the men in his vicinity into a compact group and skillfully led them through and around enemy positions to the safety of friendly lines. The gallantry displayed by Lieutenant Warnek reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
