Department of the Army, General Orders No. 42 (August 25, 1949)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] William L. Ware (ASN: 14042441), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy in the Philippine Islands, on 29 December 1941, while a member of Battery F, 60th Coast Artillery Regiment, Far East Air Force. During the heavy bombing by the Japanese on Fort Mills, Corregidor, the communications between the guns and the fire control instruments in battalion headquarters were severed. With utter disregard for his safety and upon his own initiative, he ran a communication line between the battery and battalion command posts, a distance of 350 yards. Corporal Ware’s gallant actions were of great aid to the heroic defenders on Corregidor and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
