The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Robert H. Warden (ASN: 0-1302910), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 November 1950, in the vicinity of Somin-dong, Korea. On that date Captain Warden commanded Company K of his regiment. When his and an adjacent company were trapped by a numerically superior enemy force and were threatened with destruction, Captain Warden, realizing the dangers involved, quickly established bases of fire and attacked the enemy encircling troops, making a gap through which to withdraw. When the other company had withdrawn, Captain Warden with complete disregard for his own safety, ordered his company to withdraw while he remained behind with a small group of men to cover the withdrawal and evacuate the wounded. In the course of the action Captain Warden and his small group were attacked by a large enemy force. Undaunted by the furious assault, Captain Warden, in a magnificent display of courage, single-handedly charged the enemy with hand grenades, killing and wounding a score or more and forcing the remainder to withdraw. Though almost at the point of exhaustion, he then aided two wounded men in the withdrawal through the mountains. His actions on this day were largely responsible for enabling the two companies to break out of the enemy trap. The gallantry and intrepid leadership displayed by Captain Warden reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
