The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Calvin J. Cressman (ASN: 2716337), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Moirey, France, 9 November 1918. Private Cressman, first carrier for his automatic rifle team, advanced with a patrol against strong machine-gun positions. Although wounded five times, he refused to be taken back and continued to load the automatic rifle in the face of heavy machine-gun fire.
