The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Robert N. Walters (ASN: RA-36478588), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery C, 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 November 1950 in the vicinity of Changye-ri, Korea. On that date he was a member of a convoy which was attempting to penetrated a fire-swept enemy roadblock that was approximately five miles in depth. While proceeding through the roadblock all offers of his battery became casualties and he immediately assumed command of the withdrawing column, moving the battery forward in order to allow other elements of the Division to continue through the block. After breaching the pass his group was subjected to intense hostile fire near a ford. He organized his men into an efficient force, placed them in defiladed positions and proceeded to neutralize the enemy emplacements. He then observed a disabled ambulance with several wounded aboard. He ordered a 105-mm. howitzer detached from its truck, and had the truck pull the ambulance. After destroying the firing mechanism of the abandoned piece, he led his column to thee safety of a protected hill. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he voluntarily returned with a truck to the ford, which by this time was the scene of a fierce firefight. Here he picked up several more wounded and evacuated them to safety. His leadership and intrepidity under severe hostile fire resulted in saving several seriously wounded soldiers and prevented more serous casualties in his battery. The gallantry and high degree of leadership displayed by Sergeant Walters on this occasion reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
