Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 279 (1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Henry J. Walters, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 27 July 1943. After a bulldozer detachment had been ambushed by an enemy machine gun and snipers, Corporal Walters went forward voluntarily as a member of a litter bearer party to evacuate several of the wounded. In order to reach the wounded who lay helplessly exposed he had to cross a hazardous area which was being subjected to enemy fire with such intensity that one of the wounded was struck and killed as he was being carried out. Despite the jeopardy involved Corporal Walters worked steadily and aggressively until all the wounded men had been removed from certain annihilation to safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
