The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Third Grade Vincent J. Walter (ASN: 20601465), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, from 15 to 27 March 1944. On both occasions, Technician Third Grade Walter willingly exposed himself to intense hostile fire to help evacuate wounded men. On 15 March he made his way 150 yards over fire-swept terrain to reach a front-line pillbox and help carry back two wounded soldiers. He also assisted three others to the aid station. On 27 March, he again displayed boldness, courage, and a high degree of devotion to duty in safely carrying a badly-wounded comrade through a hail of sniper bullets. Technician Third Grade Walter’s perseverance in the face of heavy odds was an inspiration to his comrades. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Third Grade Walter, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
