The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Vernon W. Wallace (ASN: US-54018314), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 8 October 1951 in the vicinity of Konsol-Li, Korea. On that date Company G was on a mission of attacking and securing Hill 636. When enemy fire halted the progress, Sergeant Wallace voluntarily moved forward to come within range of the enemy bunker defending the approach. Moving across the hill under the barrage of intense enemy fire, Sergeant Wallace reached the emplacement, crawling on top of the bunker and destroyed the emplacement with hand grenades. As a result of his courageous actions the unit moved forward and completed its mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Wallace reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
