The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Jack F. Walker (ASN: RA-14248200), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 September 1950 in the vicinity of Am-Sin, Korea. The enemy had mounted a strong attack against a rifle company to which Sergeant Walker was attached as leader of a 75-mm. recoilless rifle squad. Although heavily outnumbered and in a precarious position he held his squad in place and refused to give ground. Repeatedly, he hurled back fanatic enemy assaults and when the ammunition for his crew-served weapon was exhausted he engaged the enemy in a fire fight with individual weapons. When the enemy closed to a distance where they could throw grenades into the squad’s position and the unit was about to be cut off by a flanking movement, he and members of his unit retrieved enemy grenades and hurled them back at the onrushing enemy. This caused great casualties in the enemy ranks and in the ensuing confusion Sergeant Walker maneuvered his squad out of the threatened encirclement to the safety of a nearby rice field. Later that night he led his squad under cover of darkness to the safety of their own lines. The gallantry and outstanding leadership displayed by Sergeant Walker on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
