The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Ishmael Wayne Walker, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy near Tokchon-ni, Korea, on 22 February 1951. With the mission of attacking and securing a hill, Private Walker’s platoon came under severe mortar and small arms fire, which caused many casualties. Although wounded, Private Walker refused to be evacuated, and with disregard for his own safety, proceeded to administer first aid to other wounded men and assist in their evacuation. After carrying an injured soldier to safety, he insisted on returning for a second trip. Upon reaching the top of the hill, Private Walker began giving medical treatment to a fellow comrade when a mortar shell exploded nearby and mortally wounded him. As a result of his action, the lives of several soldiers were saved. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private Walker, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
