The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Ansil L. Walker (ASN: 0-1303971), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of Company D, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 February 1951, near Chipyong-ni, Korea. Captain Walker’s company was furnishing supporting fire for the rifle companies of the battalion which were under enemy attack. Although enemy artillery and mortar counter-battery fire was falling on his positions, he fearlessly exposed himself as he moved about his area, encouraging his gunners to deliver maximum fire. On one occasion, his decision to fire white phosphorous shells, after the illuminating type was expended, enabled the riflemen to observe the enemy and to inflict heavy casualties upon them with automatic weapons. Later during the attack, he personally supervised the re-supply of ammunition for his 75-mm. recoilless rifle platoon which was engaged with the enemy. His exemplary conduct under fire was an inspiration to his troops and contributed greatly to the .successful defense of the perimeter. The gallantry displayed by Captain Walker reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
