Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 42 (1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class A. W. Walker (ASN: RA-18291178), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 3d Reconnaissance Company, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 18 January 1951, near Kumyangjang-ni, Korea, while reconnoitering, Sergeant Walker’s platoon was ambushed by a well dug-in enemy using automatic weapons and mortars. During the ensuing action Sergeant Walker left his covered position to carry a wounded comrade to safety from an open field, and while doing so he was exposed to fire from enemy weapons. He succeeded, although seriously wounded himself during this gallant act, in removing the man to safety. Sergeant Walker’s intrepid action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
