The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private John G. Walczak (ASN: US-52069692), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 September 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date, the unit of which Private Walczak was a member, had the mission of spearheading an attack on an enemy-held hill. No sooner had the unit advanced when it was pinned down by intense enemy fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private Walczak advanced toward the enemy’s position, inflicting numerous casualties and destroying several automatic rifles before being fatally wounded. As a result of his self-sacrificing action the unit was able to continue its advance. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Walczak reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
