The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Rex L. Waite (ASN: RA-16302726), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. Corporal Waite was a member of a patrol which, mounted on tanks, had the mission of reducing an enemy roadblock. The patrol was subjected to intense hostile anti-tank and automatic weapons fire and several soldiers fell wounded in exposed positions. Corporal Waite, disregarding the heavy enemy fire sweeping the terrain, dashed to his comrades’ aid and helped them to climb aboard the tanks. He then covered them with rifle fire while the tanks turned about and was wounded while doing so. When the tanks started to withdraw he manned a .50 caliber machine gun and, in spite of his intense pain, raked the hostile positions with his machine gun fire until he was struck a second time by enemy fire and was killed. The gallantry and devotion to his wounded comrades displayed by Corporal Waite reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
