The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Glen E. Wagoner (ASN: RA-17308710), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 12 and 13 September 1952 in the vicinity of Kanam-dong, North Korea. At that time Private Wagoner was a member of a volunteer patrol whose mission was to retrieve the body of a dead comrade, which was deep in enemy held territory. As the patrol advanced it was ambushed and Private Wagoner was wounded. Disregarding his own painful wounds, he collected four of his comrades and deployed them to return fire upon the enemy. He then called a friendly outpost and directed devastating artillery fire on the enemy, forcing them to withdraw. Private Wagoner’s heroic actions enabled his patrol to return to friendly lines with a minimum of casualties. The outstanding gallantry displayed by Private Wagoner is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
