The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Frank Paul Montury, Jr. (ASN: US-56694507), United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Montury distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 20 and 21 November 1967 while serving as a squad leader in the Second Platoon of Company A, 2d Battalion, 1st Infantry regiment, 196th Infantry Brigade. On 20 November, while operating on fresh intelligence, Company A was conducting a search and clear mission in the vicinity of Tam Ky. As the company was approaching a suspected hostile village, intense enemy fire was directed against various elements of Company A, wounding several men. Unhesitatingly, Specialist Montury had his squad return fire while he assisted the casualties. While attempting to reach one of the men, Specialist Montury was wounded. Despite his wound, he initiated a heavy base of fire to cover the other wounded and guided the medical evacuation helicopter to his location. After the wounded were evacuated, Specialist Montury still refused medical aid and continued in pursuit of the enemy until the hostile forces were subdued. On the following day, 21 November, Company A swept the battle area to clear it of snipers. As the Second Platoon was setting up as rear security, the entire company came under intense hostile mortar and small arms fire. Specialist Montury was again wounded, this time seriously. Having discovered that his platoon leader was some distance away from his position, when it became apparent that no one else would assume command of the men, and that his platoon sergeant was killed, Specialist Montury took charge of the major element of his platoon. Despite his wounds and with total disregard for his personal safety, Specialist Montury repeatedly exposed himself to the enemy’s fire as he maneuvered from casualty to casualty to render assistance. After securing the wounded in his platoon, he personally advanced approximately 100 meters across an open rice paddy in an attempt to link up with the remainder of his company in pursuit of the enemy. Specialist Fourth Class Montury’s personal bravery, devotion to duty, and unselfish concern for his fellow soldiers were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
