Vickery (ASN: 0-1999810), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Grady M. Vickery (ASN: 0-1999810), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 14 August 1950, a platoon protecting a large steel bridge spanning the Naktong River in the vicinity of Namji, Korea, was attacked by overwhelming numbers of enemy well supported by automatic weapons. Lieutenant Vickery, heedless of the concerted fire, constantly moved about the position encouraging his men, selecting targets and directing devastating fire on the onrushing enemy. By his example of calm courage and brilliant leadership he inspired his men to hold the position and inflict heavy casualties on the attacking force. Lieutenant Vickery’s exemplary bravery, steadfastness and selfless devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
