Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 278 (July 9, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Kenneth J. Ver Hey (ASN: RA-16334457), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 28 May 1951, in the vicinity of Hadap, Korea. On that date, his unit was riding tanks constituting the infantry element of an armored task force. The column was halted by an enemy roadblock and the troops were dispersed by intense enemy machine gun, automatic weapons, and mortar fire. A tracked vehicle mounting quadruple .50 caliber machine guns had been damaged and three of the crew had been wounded while two others had abandoned the vehicle because of the intense enemy fire directed at it. Corporal Ver Hey, with complete disregard for intense enemy fire directed at him, made his way to the vehicle in an effort to start its motor. Being unable to do so, he again exposed himself to the enemy fire and crawled under the machine, discovering that the batteries had been struck by bullets. Seeing that there were two undamaged batteries on the gun mount, Corporal Ver Hey again mounted the machine, narrowly escaping death from a sudden bust of machine gun fire, and used those two batteries as boosters, finally managing to start the machine. He then drove it to a place of safety, stopping on the way while still under heavy enemy fire to pick up wounded comrades. The gallantry displayed by Corporal Ver Hey reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
