The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Dominick J. Verdi (ASN: 32242590), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 17 March 1944. When the enemy concentrated on a machine gun position adjacent to the pillbox occupied by Sergeant Verdi, he immediately went to the assistance of the hard-pressed gun crew and drove the enemy back after killing several. Every member of the machine-gun crew had been wounded and they were unable effectively to defend themselves. Without Sergeant Verdi’s timely aid the position would have been captured and the gun crew killed. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Verdi, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
