The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Guy V. Vaughn (ASN: 0-2001663), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 December 1950, in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. On that date his battalion was attempting to break through an enemy roadblock. The well emplaced and well-armed enemy subjected the battalion to intense fire, forcing the battalion to seek cover. Lieutenant Vaughn completely ignored the intense enemy fire, and moved among the men, organizing them and placing them in sheltered positions where they could return the hostile fire. When the enemy fire became too intense and devastating, he grouped his men and led them toward friendly lines, attempting to bypass the enemy. After proceeding for approximately one hour, an enemy outpost was encountered. Lieutenant Vaughn went forward, armed with grenades, and assaulted the enemy position, killing the two enemy soldiers who were manning the position. When the group moved forward again, he led the way and scouted for enemy positions. During the night he encountered a concentration of approximately 50 enemy, located directly in front of the group. He personally led his men in a savage attack which killed or routed the enemy force. During the entire forced march, he constantly checked among his men, encouraging them and urging them on. He led his men over approximately 50 miles of rough mountainous terrain, without map or compass, inflicting severe casualties upon the enemy with a minimum of casualties among his own personnel. The gallantry and superior leadership displayed by Lieutenant Vaughn reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
