The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Miles C. Vaughan (ASN: 0-62259), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer, Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 May 1951 in the vicinity of Hyon-ni, Korea. On this date Company F had the mission of clearing the ridges of enemy snipers. In order to reach the ridge line the company had to cross an open area completely exposed to enemy observation and fire. While crossing this open area, one of the men was wounded by hostile fire and the enemy continued to fire upon him. Lieutenant Vaughan, without regard for his own safety, moved to an exposed position and commenced firing on the ridges, attempting to draw the enemy fire. Due to the accuracy and intensity of Lieutenant Vaughan’s fire, the enemy concentrated their fire on him. At this time, two men, to whom Lieutenant Vaughan had previously given orders, immediately moved out and carried their wounded comrade to safety. Completely disregarding the intensity of enemy fire, Lieutenant Vaughan continued to return fire until his men had attained a covered position. The gallantry in action and devotion to comrades demonstrated by Lieutenant Vaughan reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
