The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Anthony VanderVliet (ASN: RA-6901285), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. Master Sergeant VanderVliet was serving with a team which was repairing communication lines to Company C. While working on the mountainside the crew was met by the company which was withdrawing under heavy enemy attack. With the aid of one man, Master Sergeant VanderVliet, armed with an automatic rifle, fought a rear guard action for the company, neutralized at least one hostile machine gun and so effectively harassed and delayed the attackers that the company was able to complete its movement in an orderly manner. At a river crossing he assisted in carrying wounded through the shoulder-deep water to safety. Master Sergeant VanderVliet’s gallant and unflagging devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
