Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 123 (May 29, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal George R. Van Sciver (ASN: RA-19328267), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 February 1951 near Ip’o-ri, Korea. Corporal Van Sciver was a radio operator for Company I while that unit was in defensive positions against a strong enemy force of estimated regiment size. The unit suffered heavy casualties and Corporal Van Sciver, with complete disregard for his own safety, exposed himself to intense enemy fire to evacuate the wounded. On one occasion he took a position on the line where enemy fire was extremely heavy and inflicted heavy casualties upon the enemy. When the platoon was forced to withdraw to the bottom of the hill, Corporal Van Sciver, along with eight other men, launched a bayonet charge up the hill. During this assault he fired his weapon with great effectiveness. The gallant conduct of Corporal Van Sciver reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
